V2V EMPRESS DESIGN COMPETITION WINNER
The V2V Vacations Creative Catamaran Design Competition was won by Chief William Cook for his orca design. Cook (Mona’kwala) of the ‘Namgis First Nation was born on June 23, 1974 in Alert Bay, BC. He was raised culturally by his grandparents of the Matilpi and Alfred families. In 1993 he participated in a sacred cannibal dance as his grandfather Gus Matilpi initiated him into his hamat’sa, the most prestigious society of the Kwakwaka’wakw. A father of four, he is known throughout his community for his dancing potlatches and has held two feasts of his own. Under the guidance of artists such as Francis Dick and Paddy Seaweed his passion for art flourished. He works in different mediums including acrylic, cedar panels and repousse. He is best known for his jewellery, carving and ornate traditional Kwakwaka’wakw images in silver and gold.

TABLES WITH A WEST COAST TWIST
Artist Jerry Kool produced the wooden table route map found onboard. A boat builder with a strong bond to the sea, he spent eight years cruising on a sailboat chasing warmer weather.
Originally from Holland, he moved to BC in the 1990’s and began his small woodworking business. A customer commission to create a wood map of Vancouver Island led him to discovering charts. In the years since, he has created many works based on charts, although not on the scale of the table commission for V2V, a challenging project that he is very proud of, especially when he cruises onboard as a guest.
